The Bald Head Lighthouse was built in 1817 on Bald Head Island near the Cape Fear River in North Carolina. The lighthouse is no longer active but is the oldest lighthouse in North Carolina still standing and is known as old Baldy. The Lighthouse is open to the public for tourism purposes and its five foot thick walls served as a shelter to the residents of the Island during hurricane Fran in 1996.
