Sandy Hook Lighthouse originally called The New York Lighthouse is located in Sandy Hook, New Jersey. The Lighthouse was designed and built in 1764 by Isaac Conro and is the oldest active lighthouse in the United States. The lighthouse has never been moved but in 1764 it was only 500 feet from the shoreline and today due to sediment it is nearly 1 and ½ miles from shore.
The Sandy Hook Lighthouse survived an attempt to destroy it by Continental Army to prevent the British from using the light to navigate, the British then failed in an attempt to destroy the light after claiming the point. Heavily damaged since the Revolutionary War the light remains active and was restored in 2000.
